Fanni’s research

The photorealism had been assigned to us. After the first brain-storming I picked up the themes like photos, places, paintings, nature, technology, time, etc. for the brain-storming.

Based on the experiences of last year I tried not to over complicate my job, especially the story. I rather do something really nice, something photo real.

That’s why I had an idea about making a museum in 3D. In a museum, there are lots of themes, such as dinosaurs, space, art, etc., so we could choose from them. Everyone could have done something they like or are interested in.

Elizabeth had a very similar idea and we were discussing about going to a museum and taking reference images when Ruby came up with her idea.

The Mother Nature.

Last year I liked doing my rainforest, so I was open for the idea. I like the lots of opportunities in this theme. However, there might be too much opportunities and we have to be careful not to put everything together, because it might be too much and difficult to understand.

This is the advantage of working in groups: to help each other and find the best way to deliver our ‘message’.

I like the idea that we could put the Mother Nature to the present days. Everybody has a clear idea what is happening with the Earth. However, lots of people do nothing. They believe that there is nothing to do and it’s irreversible. I believe that we have to try to slow it down at least.

So, I was thinking about what is an effect on the Earth/ the nature. I’ve got to themes such as global warming, people’s carelessness: littering, fires in forests, deforestation, continuous constructions, factories, cars, or pollution emissions…

GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming is faster and faster with each passing years. Soon enough there will be bigger differences in temperature and that would change much faster with the changing of the seasons. There will be bigger storms and alternations of very dry and rainy summers.

I could write more about global warming but it’s not mine main theme that I want to think about.  There are lots of articles in this theme, which are worth to read.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming

http://www.nrdc.org/globalwarming/

http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/

The ‘message’ shouldn’t be what we should do because we are not the experts of global warming and we do not have the right to say what everyone has to do. However we could show what happens to the Earth/ Mother Nature and show that it’s going to be faster and faster and we shouldn’t be so careless.

As it has come up that we could deliver a kind of message with our animation, I was reading about organizations, campaigns to save/protect the Earth.

I have also found some very nice and interesting pictures about this theme.

I like that image in the space because it illustrates it as I would illustrate the Mother Nature. I was thinking about to put the Mother Nature into the space as she would be looking down to the Earth.

I was thinking about that Mother Nature could be humanoid and her body would be covered with “nature”. Or the nature itself could shape her body. Therefore I was looking for other ‘creatures’ who looks similar, and how others think that the Mother Nature looks like.

I have also tried to find pictures about nature for references, as it could build up her body or texture her skin. Then I have come up with different ideas, like the river could be her veins, nice, colorful and green plants could represent what is still alive on her, and deserts or swampy thing what’s already dead. Volcanoes could show her anger or the rain her sadness. (Sun the happiness). I was also playing with the idea that a part of her, for example her legs, would be in water (sea or ocean) and her legs growth from algae.

Another idea: she could be illustrated as she would be the part of the Nature. For example in Swamp Thing Comics. Swamp Thing is part of the Swamp/Nature and when he needs to heel or rest he lies in the swamp and that he becomes the part of it.

Ryan mentioned the film, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. In the very beginning, there’s Thalia’s tale, who protected 3 other children. She scarified and died to become a tree and protected the camp. I liked the way how she was transformed to that tree. Maybe we could choose a stage from her transformation to create our Mother Nature.

COLOURS

As I mentioned before I would use very colorful and green plants to represent the alive parts. The plain, dark colors (stand for the desert and swampy, rocky things) would represent the dead things on her. We had to decide how human-ish she would be. Would she be more creature-ish? Until then we can’t exactly define the colors.

I was reading an article about what kind of effect the colors have on us. It was really interesting, however, it was in Hungarian.

https://web-server.hu/igy-hatnak-a-szinek-a-konverziora-hasznald-oket-tudatosan/

In the article there was a company who has a website. On the website the “get started” button was green. They wanted to do a test about which color makes them more people to click on the button. They changed it to red and they were keep changing the colors for a week. Looking the results they realized the red button has made them more customers than the green one. Because the green color is not as powerful as the red one. Most people look at he red color first and just after to the green. The green is more neutral than the red.
Therefore, I was looking into color theory, and what the colors mean to most people and what they symbolize.

red: power, anger, danger…
-orange: energy, love, warmness, endeavour…
-yellow: wisdom, joy…
-green: harmony, health, creativity, peace…
-blue: safety, perseverance…
-purple: wisdom, self-control, intellect…
-gold: dignity, money, opportunity, luck…
-white: purity, innocence, boredom…
-black: power, darkness, grief…
grey: sadness, boredom..

colors

I was also reading about it in English too.
http://www.incredibleart.org/lessons/middle/color2.htm

I think we could take this article into account, because the colors have an effect on us. Even if we don’t know about it.

I was watching films in which the nature is a key element of the movie. Not just the nature itself, but how we destroy it and how it can kill. Sometimes nature way is much stronger than we are. I was learning how they illustrated the nature and of course what colors they had used.

I would like to mention 3 movies now :

The Day After Tomorrow – 2004

As Paleoclimatologist named Jack Hall is in Antarctica, he discovers that a huge ice sheet has sheared off. But what he does not know is that this event will trigger a massive climate shift that will affect the world population. Meanwhile, his son Sam is with friends in New York to attend an event. There they discover that it has been raining non-stop for the past 3 weeks, and after a series of weather-related disasters begin to occur over the world, everybody realizes the world is entering a new Ice Age and the world population begins trying to evacuate to the warmer climates of the south. Jack makes a daring attempt to rescue his son and his friends who are stuck in New York and who have managed to survive not only a massive wave but also freezing cold temperatures that could possibly kill them. Written by John Wiggins

I liked the way how everything turned to the Ice Age. How easily the nature could go wild and destroy everything we had. We had to realize that it had happened because of the Global warming and the way we lived. It made me think that what if it would really happen? Is it the Nature or just the result of the global warming, which was caused by us? Or both? Would it mean the end of life? For the people only, or for the Nature, too?

I think this movie could help us to make the story. We have to think about that which of these questions or other questions we’d like to be asked. It’s very complex. We have to know what we want to achieve with this project. Of course, I don’t think that we could change the world but I think it would be a very good idea if we put a message across our project.

Wall-E – 2008

In a distant, but not so unrealistic, future where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation, WALL-E, a garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. Mesmerized with trinkets of Earth’s history and show tunes, WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach. One day, EVE, a sleek (and dangerous) reconnaissance robot, is sent to Earth to find proof that life is once again sustainable. WALL-E falls in love with EVE. WALL-E rescues EVE from a dust storm and shows her a living plant he found amongst the rubble. Consistent with her “directive”, EVE takes the plant and automatically enters a deactivated state except for a blinking green beacon. WALL-E, doesn’t understand what has happened to his new friend, but, true to his love, he protects her from wind, rain, and lightning, even as she is unresponsive. One day a massive ship comes to reclaim EVE, but WALL-E, … Written by Anonymous

It was a nice idea to let the children know what could happen with the world in their own ‘language’. However I don’t think that this film had a serious effect. I liked that it had positive end. It showed that we would have been able to protect the Nature.

I also liked the way how the Earth looked even from the Space. It gave an idea how the Earth would look like without nature.

Avatar 2009

When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge’s intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar” identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora. Written by The Massie Twins

We talked about this movie with Ryan and Ruby. In this film we could see how the people ‘care’ and turn against the Nature. However, we couldn’t see the Nature’ dying. It could be seen how people destroyed animals, creatures or any living thing just because of fearing unknown.

I haven’t thought about a concrete story yet. However I have ideas like :

  • Mother Nature would be a human (woman). Her body would be covered with “Nature” but we could see her getting older as the Nature itself is dying on her.
  • We could show on her body how the Nature changed during the years and has started to die. In the end she could cry. As a result it would start to rain.
  • She would stand on an Island which is part of her. This island could get smaller and smaller.

We could put all of these together. We haven’t been thinking about the story, as a group, yet. Therefore I’d like to wait with it until we have a common agreement on what to do.

At the moment everyone work on their own researches so we could use everyone’s ideas.

We were looking for artist, who worked with nature, with Elizabeth. We learned how the famous artists had painted landscapes and how the modern artists see and use the nature.

Claude MONET

1840-1926

claude-monet-landscape-painting-794-2 grainstack-impression-in-pinks-and-blues Monet-Claude-London-Parliament-Sun poplars-on-the-banks-of-the-river-epte-seen-from-the-marsh-1892

I like Monet’s style, the way he painted. I like his use of colors and how he had a different eye to see the Nature. We cannot really use his paintings as a reference because they are not really photo real. Although it’s very good to take into account his view of the Nature. His colors would definitely match to the part when Mother Nature is in early years. He used very bright colors and often painted with complementary colors (especially with orange and blue, green and red).

Munkácsy Mihály

1844-1900

munk1 munk2 munk3 munkacsy

He was a quite famous artist. Although he wasn’t famous of his landscapes but he had few really nice ones, which I personally like.

He’d rather painted the way the things are really was. He was more close to the photorealism than Monet. He used quite dark colors sometimes, which gave a different feeling to the whole paintings. I think we could use his colors when the Nature is changing, when it turns to dark.

Jeremy Mann

1979-

Manhattan Nights-jm  New York Rains-jm Rooftops in the Snow-jm the market street steamvent-jm Winter, New York-jm

He is a modern artist and he mainly paints cityscapes. We looked him with Elizabeth because the group’s idea is that put Mother Nature in to the modern world. In the modern world we associated with the cities growing bigger in every possible direction. It could cause that the Nature is less and less.

We liked the colors of his paintings: the greyness of the cities or the lights of the cities at night.

He also paints landscapes. I like the paintings where the city’s lights and colors influence Nature colors. That is also turning them a little bit greyish.

The Bay Morning at Thousand Islands Lake-jm Distant Lights from the Bay-jm

And farther from the city the nicer and cleaner colors the Nature is. The ‘theory’ could be used as a transition between the effected Nature and the non-effected one.

I also looked in the 3D Artist and 3D world magazines. I found really nice and photo-real pictures. I was reading about how they were made which scared me that we don’t have time at all. Especially, because we are not so experienced in creating something that complex. Moreover to achieve something that photo real. I believe it requires lots of practice. But we never give it up. I think we’ll do our best and create something nice together.

In 3D World (June 2014), I found a picture of an Ice Princess made by Jiri Adamec. The softwares he used were 3ds Max, Zbrush, mental ray and Photoshop.

3

I liked how she looked like. How her hair had been made and how the ice was on her body. We could use that as a reference just instead of the ice we would use plants. I also like the way he thought about things and how he achieved the look he wanted.

He says: “ I wanted to capture the beauty of ice in different forms. Ice in the real world makes wonderful shapes, and I wanted to recreate this icy beauty…”

I absolutely agree with him, but I would transform everything into plants. We should think about these things, too and try to show the beauty of the nature. There’s beauty in the nature. If we could catch the beauty part well then it is easy to destroy it and show how it turns to dead.

In 3d World (December 2014) there is another beautiful picture: the Saxman portrait made by Alessandro Bandinelli. The Softwares he used: ZBrush, 3ds Max, V-Ray, Photoshop.

4

Although it’s a man’s portrait it’s just made me want to learn more about texturing and creating something so special. The way he made his skin is unbelievable. At the first sight I thought everyone would think that it’s an actual photograph. I liked that he was thinking about tiny things, such as very little scars on the skin, moles, and small hairs on the face. The lighting makes it nicer too, and the whole image has a feeling- “ I enjoyed studying the skin shader, and especially compositing the rendered image to achieve the mood.”

3d World ( May 2014). There’s a similar picture called Urban Melancony, made by Sergey Andereychenko. Softwares he used: 3ds Max, ZBrush, V-Ray, Photoshop.

5

Actually I like the same things in this picture that I liked in the previous one. The mood he has achieved it is fantastic. I mean how he could achieved that.

In the 3d World (November 2014) there is an article about Heavyweight Rendering with Rebusfarm 2.0. It wasn’t actually the article that I wanted to mention but the picture under it.

8

I liked the way how the plants grew everywhere and covered the city. It showed that it was not just the serious number of people and the growing cities were unstoppable but the Nature found its way to grow.  If it had a chance it would take back everything we had taken from Nature.

3d Artist (Issue 65). I found a beautiful picture of overgrown foliage, made by: Jesús Fernández Calderon. Software that he used: ZBrush, Maya, Photoshop, mental ray, After Effects.

76

I liked that there was only the nature on it. The colours of the rainforest were just the perfect colors to illustrate a very nice forest/ place with plants. The plants were in perfect, ‘healthiest’ forms there. We could make something similar, if we decide to put Mother Nature into her own world, or her house (as we were talking about it as well). I definitely could picture Mother Nature in an environment like this.
