Rubys progress with the project

My emails with the media make up department:

These are the first emails with the media make up department one of the tutors Sonya Davies passed me over to another tutor named Rachel . Me and Ryan were available to meet with her at which point I explained to the class what we were looking for in terms of make up. This resulted in a student named Sophie volunteering to help us in our project. Who I then emailed with the details.

After the emails we spoke in person and arranged to meet to test the make up. As we could not arrange a model I was the test subject just so Sophie knew what was required of her with the project in the next few months and we knew what it would look like. The process took roughly an hour and I filmed it and took photographs which are below.

This is the email I sent to Gabrielle one of our class members friends who is a teaching assistant for the drama department. This is what I sent her after we as a group met her. Following my discussion with the class member who knew her.

Unfortunately after the email was sent to her and her class we heard nothing back, and having a lot on with other projects held us back slightly. So when I got the email address of the head of the drama department I decided not to use it. As it would take at least a few weeks of going back and forth to try and get someone involved. Instead I consulted the group and offered to speak to a friend of mine to do the acting and be the model with the make up. The group were fine to go ahead with this so I contacted my friend and then took reference photographs of her body for my character model. Which was partially built and I intended to match to her shape. The model I had partially built turned out to be to hard to work from so I had to start building again. I also spent a couple of days trying to generate a cg model from 123d catch. This also turned out to be harder to work from and unhelpful. So I continued to build with the model I had. This model is now finished but the poly count needs to be taken down. I have however passed it on to my team member Fanni for rigging. 2/3/15

One of the first production based things I did in this project was arrange a date for us to take the footage of the environments and booked out the camera for us on that day. I picked up my team members and drove us to a location to shoot. We were supposed to go to a different location but my team members were worried about time because of other projects so we changed locations to somewhere closer. All that footage was then put on the render server so we could all have copies.

The next thing I looked out was sound in particular background music. As a group we spoke before about having something just peaceful and calm playing in the background when mother nature was going about her daily routine. I then thought of having something dramatic when the change happens just a subtle difference in sound so the audience knows that its a pivotal point in the animation.

These are just some of the things I listened to briefly to get an idea or sound in the beginning of the piece.

This is something I read regarding sound which I believe is true humans interpret sound as a positive and negative like everything else and that’s why we use it in film to draw on our emotions and fears.

To hint to the audience something is about to happen but also amp up the fear as they don’t no exactly when it will happen.

With this I began thinking about the change of our character and the music would have to be dramatic and almost sad as she was meant to be dying. I was speaking to my friend on the phone when he was playing the guitar and told him to play something dramatic. What he played sounded spot on for that scene while he played it I pictured it. So I told him I would book him in the studio the following week and showed him examples of what I would like in the beginning of the piece and told him what the scene was. I thought it would be easier to record both pieces in one day although I would of liked the beginning music to have had other instruments such as the piano. My friend could only play the guitar and was on a tight schedule. Otherwise I would of liked to play with the additional sounds a lot more. The two pieces of guitar music is a good base which we could edit and add to throughout the project.

On the day of recording unfortunately my friend could not make it due to family issues and he consequently had to go to Malta for family. He was unable to send me the sounds himself.

After this I took it upon myself to try and make a sound track using apps on my phone a sound recorder and software at college. This is because I don’t want to simply use sound from the internet. I also collected sounds such as walking, rustling and other diegetic sounds to create a library of sounds so we can use them alongside sounds from the internet if necessary, so we have more options and its more original. 16/3/15

I was also contacting both the model and Sophie, as well as talking with the tutor for motion capture to arrange a date to film the final motion capture and footage. I also had to talk to the technician to see if we could use the camera on a specific day as well as check with group members to find a day suitable for filming. When I had arranged for motion capture tests prior only one group member made it to help. So I tried to keep in contact through our group message with updates for when the model and Sophie where available, so that this time we could all be there.

Although this time as there was only one date both the model and Sophie were free to shoot we had to use the small green screen room instead of the centroid one as it was booked out on that day. On the day I went in and set up with the tutor and Ryan. I was then communicating to the model what we wanted from her in terms of acting and motion capture. Me and Ryan were choosing camera angles and for motion capture I was again telling the model what we wanted with Ryan’s input while Ryan was recording. When Sophie and her colleague got there I was telling them what we wanted and that we would be shooting in stages or partial make up to full faced make up to show the changes. Fanni did check in every now and then briefly to look at some shots and see what we were doing. Once everything was filmed I took it all on my hard drive and but it on the render server for the others I also went through and named everything accordingly and moved shots that wouldn’t be used into a separate file. 12/3/15 (shoot day).
